With both a druid and a cleric in the part both able to use this ability as an at will power the only real reason why A magic item in their group should go unnoticed is they're trolling her.

I would think most magical classes would be able to sense, at the very least, some kind of unnatural property about the weapon.

I know rangers can't suss out the enchantments on an item, but I would think that, being in tune with nature, they could feel an unnatural sensation about it.

Oh Please, I'm in a party with 2 druids and a bard, and I still have to ask an NPC witch that's with us if things are magic. This is entirely believable.

"detect magic"
I've only played a couple spell casters, but when I do I have detect magic on just about all the time. One time I was gone from a session but my character was still involved, so they basically just had him detect magic on everything cuz that's exactly what I would have done

My cleric searches whole buildings with detect magic because there is not much point in accumulating more gold in 5e

Am I the only person who feels that this shopkeeper guy (or at least the gm behind him) has every right to be really annoyed now... technically, neither of those two succeeded their sense motive rolls, so they have no reason to be suspicious... I must say, that sort of play is what breaks the system. The gm has to decide whether or not they notice something without giving them the rolls or automatically make them suspicious by giving them a roll.

Sorry for the rant, but I've run into a good few players who do this and it really gets on my nerves that if I give them one sense motive roll or perception/awareness/spot roll that they fail, they will keep trying to roll until they succeed or else just jump to conclusions like these two did.

Alright, I'm ok with it if they OOC find something suspicious in a character I'm playing at the time if their reasons are along the lines of 'That answer was far too quick, I think he preprepared it', but not just 'The GM never gives us answers that quick to random NPCs, this guy is important' or I might even allow it if they say that they genuinely found the NPCs manner suspicious, so long as it doesn't become so regular that it becomes obvious they are just responding to the roll, but seriously? Metagaming just... *sigh*

This is one reason why I think 4e going with passive insight or whatever it is works a bit better. You don't roll Sense Motive, instead your opponent will roll Bluff and your Sense Motive or Insight or what have you is the DC. Then the GM just needs to get in the habit of randomly rolling dice while doing NPC interaction, and you can never be sure if it's Sense Motive, or a Spot check, or nothing at all.

It also streamlines play a bit, which is good too.

I must say that despite what others say, I do like 4E, although I feel that it could do classes and powers a bit better and the whole element revolving around encounters is a little weird when the definition of encounters is so wishy washy.

That said, I might try working something like this into a house rule at some point if I can get the players to agree to it. As for getting into habits of rolling dice, that works, or I could just use a random dice roller on my phone whenever I want to make a discrete roll. After all, a look downwards doesn't mean anything since I could just be looking at my notes, and the phone is silent... *chuckles*

Thankyou, you've just given me some inspiration for sorting out this sort of problem in the future.

I don't know, I've always found that the sound of the DM randomly rolling dice to be a wonderful tool. Just the sound. Just randomly roll dice occasionally and then they'll constantly wonder what's going on.

I know in pathfinder at least, you CAN reroll failed perception checks to notice people as a move-action. Most other skills you can't, that that is one that you can.
