Flanking - Simply put, it's easier to hit someone when you've got a friend attacking from the other side of your enemy.

Sneak Attack - Characters with the Class Ability "Sneak Attack" get to deal extra damage if they either flank their target or if their target can't use their Dexterity Bonus for their Armor Class for some reason (i.e., their first turn as not come up in battle yet).

Shooting into melee - If you use a ranged weapon on someone who's fighting in melee, you get a penalty to your accuracy. If you would have hit your target, but missed because of that penalty, you hit whoever your target's fighting against instead.

ok, so its not "firing into melee" but "firing into a grapple" but...
our frontliner was in the middle of a grapple when the ranger fired her arrow. she rolled to hit and... A CRIT! now the 50/50 to see who she hits... our frontliner. the group wanted to try out a crit chart so we pulled one out and it turns out he got shot in the knee... yup, our ranger killed our frontline fighter with an arrow to the knee

"Imprecise Shot"
When life gives you kittens, make kitten-ade, huh?
As far as shooting into melee... My Orsimer Favored Soul joined the party when they were lv2, so I missed the shenanigans where they learned not to. But the first thing we had to do was get past a xenophobic Nord city-state's border patrol, who we unfortunately ran afoul of. Long story short, I had to heal the Warblade while apologizing profusely for critting him in the thigh with my crossbow while we were fighting a pair of rangers, and dodge when I was later standing between him and a door we needed to break down. The party nearly confiscated my bow, too.

I don't think I've ever had a DM who used the "shooting into melee" rule outside of a grapple. Fortunately, I'm usually the only person masochistic enough to initiate a grapple. (cf. "Barbarian halfling" a few comics back. It was using the 5e rules, but it was ALSO the most memorable grapple I've ever had. A VERY angry halfling trying to tip over a Large dragon-humanoid Brute by wrapping herself around his knees? It obviously didn't succeed, but it was VERY entertaining.)

The most epic story is the "I attack with my brain" motivator. While arguable if it actually happened, it's just the most awesome story involving any kind of ranged attack ever.

This 'firing into melee' thing seems odd to me, from a gameplay perspective. Sure, you can compensate with a feat, but the only thing the mechanic apears to do is make the guy with the archer just skip their turn half of the time.

True, but from a "combat simulator" perspective, using ranged weapons when your targets and allies are all bunched up and moving around is a bad idea and you'd have to be stupid good to pull it off.

What doesn't make since to me is why the archer didn't attack the guy who wasn't in melee.

As probably one of the few non-D&D players* I appreciate DragonTrainer explaining these things. Even if I don't always get it at a glance, at least I have the option of Googling for more detailed rules. >.>

As for shooting into melee, its all about the build in the systems I have used, and from what everyone tells me D&D isn't that much of an exception. Even without a lot of the "fancier" build tricks, just having a good Skill can suffice when you take enough turns to Aim and wait for a clear shot.

Granted it helped that I was usually shooting something really, really BIG like an Ogre. From behind. While he nearly slaughtered the rest of the party.**

*Okay, so I have played it, but it was less than a dozen sessions of 3.5 over a decade ago.
**In my defense that was our battle plan and for some reason, in a GURPS campaign about mercenaries in a quasi-medieval, low fantasy world, none of our melee fighters took High Pain Threshold. The Shock penalties... 8-X
