Ahh, it's the baby version of prismatic spray!

and probably the best 1st level spell out there, well besides the horribly broken things like power word pain or Psionic minor creation.

I'm partial to magic missile, myself.

Color spray is initially more powerful, but magic missile can buffed to ungodly heights (5d20*2 if I recall correctly, I remember seeing an unholy powerful magic missile like this. Dude went through the campaign focusing solely on MM.) with just a few feats, and it is equally effective against incorporeals as well as mundanes. Nothing resists force damage.

Then again, I'm just partial to force damage spells.

EDIT: I dun a stupid. Just realized you meant early on. Magic missile can be improved with metamagic to compare to any damage dealing spell. It can outclass most higher spells if you pour enough feats into it.

Not sure why you would do that when you can homebrew more force spells, but not everyone favors homebrewing.

well if you're counting what happens with prestigue class features and metamagic, Silent Image in the hands of a shadowcraft mage is the clear winner being capable of mimicing every spell in the books on the fly including a 0xp cost Miracle or Wish and causing MORE damage than the spell it replicates if the opponent makes its save.

One of these days, I should join a skype campaign with some guys on here, and make a perfectly ordinary fighter just to screw with them.

Just looked both of those up, and I have to say...
Who gave those people their spell writing licenses? Because they should be fired, and all the people they let write spells should not be allowed to write anything ever again.
